John Dunn is one of our regular seafarers that does some training and consultancy work for us when he is ashore. Why not read on and find out a bit more about John.....
We did a little interview style Q&A session with John and he very kindly took the time out of his schedule at sea to give us these answers.
What's your day job?
I am an offshore medic . My current role is the Medical Team Lead for a small fleet of vessels on a Seismic Vessel in the South Atlantic on the Argentine/Falkland Islands Border
What do you love most about your job?
If I am honest I would say on time off! This is luxury that was ill afforded in the NHS or land based jobs.
What do you do in your spare time?
What's that?? I have 5 grandchildren one is 7 and I tend to spend time with them. I also have an Army of Nieces and Nephews so where possible I spend time with them watching my wallet get raided.
Tell us more about your medical background?
I trained as a nurse in 1990 working briefly on an orthopaedic ward before getting a staff nurse post in a busy A&E rising the ranks to become an ENP, I converted to paramedicine in 2000 and I stayed in Emergency Care all my NHS career working both in and pre hospital finally leaving a walk in centre to pursue a new life in recruiting and consulting having been on my feet for so long I thought time to put my feet up and ride a desk! ........Not for me! I stayed a few years setting up agencies ensuring compliance for the inspectorate and doing deals with trusts! I joining the BP Jigsaw project as a SAR medic in 2006 and developed the service until I joined Abermed and International SOS as a HSE Offshore Medic and Occupational Health Advisor and stayed with them for 10 years until I joined Remote Medical International as a "Freelance' where I am today!
What led you to work with Red Square Medical?
I have always enjoyed teaching and mentoring and I saw an ad on linkedin! Sent CV and a week later I was in Plymouth Uni teaching STCW to a bunch of cadets! And here I am today!
What would you say your speciality is as a Medic?
I have a few, my passion is minor injuries and primary care! However I get real kicks out of training for major incidents and medical emergencies having dealt with public incidents directly (Manchester football Riots of 2008)
What can you offer Red Square Medical clients that they may not get from another company?
With well over 20 years experience in healthcare, both in the hospital and out I can offer a plethora of services from the basics of First Aid Training to more advanced clinical skills i.e suturing. I can offer OH services such as Sickness and Absence reporting and management, Audiology and Primary testing and pre employment screening services and much more within OH even bringing the service to them especially those in remote, maritime and offshore having direct experience in all settings. I have the business and clinical experiences to assist any business large or small whether that be an audit pre flag state inspection or set up a clinical environment on a tanker, to writing policies and procedures and assisting regular employees with peer reviews. I can bring both clinical and manager into one role ensuring any clients needs fit all under one umbrella.
What are you most looking forward to about working with Red Square Medical?
I am looking forward to the future developments of Red Square Medical and the challenges it will bring.
