Meet the team - Rob Turner

ree

Rob is one of our longest serving maritime medics and has been dubbed a "legend" by many that have been taught by him, it may well be something to do with his acerbic wit but more likely his vast experience in many different sectors of the maritime industry.

We asked Rob a few questions about his career and this is what he had to say...

What's your day job?

Offshore hyperbaric medic looking after saturation divers

How long have you been a maritime medic?

40 years. I’m so old I remember when the Solent was fields

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Helping senior marine crew gain the confidence to work through the complexities of making potentially life changing medical decisions at sea without further support.

What do you do in your spare time?

Train and work my gun dog (new puppy 30 March) and hill walk autumn and winter, tend my pristine garden in the spring and summer and sail (dreaded RYA Yachtie) when its fairly flat and there’s beer on board.

What led you to work with Red Square Medical?

Chance meeting, although Liz and I worked together in the Royal Navy so we already knew one another, but that was a very long time ago.

What would you say your passion is as a Medic?

Giving people the confidence to take immediate, aggressive action as a bystander and make a difference that can change lives of individuals and families

What do you offer Red Square Medical clients that they may not get from another company?

Passion, currency and experience. I’ve been in or around vessels large and small most of my working life. I’ve had more than my share of incidents at sea and I know how the aftermath of these incidents negatively affect the crew. Ill do all I can to mitigate these incidents with robust, direct, current and evidence-based training. I don’t pay lip service and I don’t give out certificates of competence unless they’re deserved.

What do you like about working with Red Square Medical?

Someone needs to keep the Company owners feet on the ground. I like to remind her of her humble origins and regularly take the piss out of her. Good job she has a sense of humour! Seriously though, Red Square Medical are all seafarers and when you are providing support to those at sea you need to understand and have lived what they are living.
